The expanded 48-team World Cup 2026 means 12 groups, 72 group-stage matches, and far more value than the old 32-team format gave us. Here's how to think about each cluster, where our model sees edges, and which traps to dodge.
TL;DR: Don't blindly bet favorites in groups of 4. The eight 3rd-placed teams that advance bring real underdog value on draw markets. Parlay boost makes multi-leg group bets the highest expected-value play of the tournament.
How the 48-team format changes everything
Twelve groups of four. Top two from each group advance, plus the eight best third-place teams. That means 32 of 48 teams progress — a 67% survival rate versus the old 50%. Result: more conservative play from middling teams in matchday 3, more draws, and bigger edges on "double chance" markets if we had them (we keep it simple: Home/Draw/Away).
Where the value is
Group A favorites (Mexico hosts) — overvalued. Home advantage in a 48-team format is diluted because Mexico plays in different cities. The odds-implied probability of Mexico winning the group is around 55%; our model has it closer to 45%.
Group B (Argentina + Iran + Croatia + a CONCACAF qualifier) — Argentina has been the bookmaker's lock since they won 2022, but Croatia historically punches above their odds in groups. Watch for Croatia draw bets at 3.4+.
Group C through F — the European-heavy groups (Spain, Germany, France, Portugal somewhere in here depending on draw). Goals over 2.5 is the cleaner play than picking outright winners.
Underdog groups (Group H, I, J) — Africa and Asia-heavy groups. These are where the parlay-boost system pays. Stack 3 longshot draw picks here for a 5–8x parlay that boosts to 5.25–8.4x with our +5% leg bonus.
Three traps to avoid
- Backing all five South American teams to top their group. Historically only 60% do. Spread your bets.
- Parlay-laddering the opening day. Day 1 is the most upset-prone day of the tournament. Wait for matchday 2 when teams have shown form.
- Ignoring weather/elevation. Mexico City matches at 2,250m elevation favor older, slower teams less. Adjust your over/under instincts.
How to actually bet this on Fish & Chips
- Open /sports and filter by "World Cup 2026".
- Add 2–5 picks to your slip — the boost kicks in at 3 legs.
- Stake in points (1,000 points = 1 USDT, minimum 100 points).
- First lost sport bet is auto-refunded (free-bet feature) — so your first parlay has zero downside.
Group stage payouts settle within 30 minutes of the final whistle via our auto-settle worker (TheSportsDB integration). If a match goes to extra time in the knockouts, we settle on the 90-minute result for group-stage style markets.
See you on opening day.
Frequently asked questions
When does the World Cup 2026 group stage start?
Opening match: 11 June 2026 (Mexico City). Group stage runs through 27 June, knockouts begin 30 June. Fish & Chips lists all 48 teams across 12 groups with home/draw/away markets.
What's a parlay boost and how much can it pay?
Fish & Chips boosts multi-leg parlays: 3 legs = +5%, 4 legs = +10%, 5+ legs = +20%. So a 5-leg group-stage parlay paying 12x natural becomes 14.4x with the boost.
Is the draw a good bet in World Cup group games?
Historically yes when the implied probability is 30%+ — group-stage draws are common because both teams often need one point to progress. Watch for it in matchday 3 dead-rubber games.
Are USDT bets refunded if a match is postponed?
Yes. Postponements (weather, security, etc.) trigger a void after 72 hours and your stake returns automatically. Verified case-by-case in our auto-settle worker.
